This media streamer has unique features, including the way it looks and its voice search ability, which no other players have at this time. As well, it is a cinch to hook up and to jailbreak it to get Kodi. If you're willing to do a mod to it one afternoon then this may well be the device for you.

The main features are:

We are fans of the appearance of the Nexus player. Google's design team thought outside of the box with its circular shape. The console looks sleek and fits in perfectly with the rest of your entertainment equipment in your man cave.

Voice Search

The voice search on this streamer is awesome. Activate the feature by speaking into the remote, which is included for your convenience (some of the other players sell the remote separately). It's made by Google Now, which specializes in this kind of technology, so you know already you won't be disappointed. It is accurate, and this cool feature gives the Nexus Player an edge over its competitors. It can handle spoken complex phrases, and you can easily search by content title or by actor, using your voice commands.

Google Integration

Have confidence in this set-top box as it's made by Google, which has a great reputation for the quality of its products. The media streamer has an intuitive layout too, particularly if you're already using Google technologies like the Nexus tablet.

Plus, it works perfectly with Google's Cast service if you're already familiar with that. As well, if you're a fan of Google's Chrome browser, then you'll enjoy TabCast, which you access from it.

Enjoy a mirroring feature too; you can integrate it with your smartphone or tablet, provided it is Android too. Then you can mirror what you see on your mobile device to your TV screen. So, if you have a Google mobile device, then you're good to go. On the other hand, if you're an iOS or BlackBerry user, you won't be able to utilize this feature as the mirroring functionality relies on the Chromecast app.

Easy to Jailbreak

You can hack the Google Nexus Player if you wish to do so, pretty easily to get Kodi. Once you have Kodi access, you'll get additional services and subscriptions so that you can stream tons more content whenever you want to get it. For free!

Gaming Selection

Games, who wants games? You do! The gaming selection on the Google Nexus Player is better than many of its competitors. Just head to the Google Play store to see the selection. Plus, the games look great as you get 3D graphics on your HDTV with the player. You can even play games with friends when you select one of the free multiplayer games that the Play store is constantly serving up for users.

Some of the disadvantages of this media streamer are:

This box is at the higher end of the general price range for media streaming devices. At full price, it is $99. However, you can find bargains online, and we've already done the deal shopping for you. Get a great deal by clicking the price displayed at the top of this page. Easy! The lower price is much more affordable.

Few Connections

The ports built into the sides of the Nexus Player are sparse, unlike some of the other players. It has only one HDMI output, which you will be using to connect to the TV. That doesn't leave another one free for other kinds of media use. As well, its microUSB port appears to be just to get service.

Google Promotions

Ug! The Nexus box shoves Google product and services down users' throats. On many screens are advertisements for new Google content releases. It's a bit much. Google could be more subtle in its promotions, in our opinion. However, you always have the option to say no.

Limited Content

There is less video content than Roku 3. However, if you jailbreak the device to get Kodi, which we've explained, is relatively easy to do on this device, then you have a lot more streaming content available to you. Plus, the gaming selection is pretty awesome so if you're a gamer you'll like that and it might make up for the limited number of movies.
